My Life Check® was designed by the American Heart Association with the goal of improved health by educating the public on how best to live. These measures have one unique thing in common: any person can make these changes, the steps are not expensive to take and even modest improvements to your health will make a big difference. Start with one or two. This simple, seven step list has been developed to deliver on the hope we all have--to live a long, productive healthy life. Below you will find a series of videos created by the University of Nebraska Wellness Team with tips and tricks to help you attain – or keep – a healthy, good-for-your-heart lifestyle. Each video is just a few minutes long and is based on the AHA Life’s Simple 7 program. We have included University resources for each of the seven steps; so if you need guidance, you know where to go for direct assistance in creating lifestyle change.

Blood Pressure

A healthy blood pressure is important to reducing risk for heart disease and strokes. Use “UNL Wellness Life’s Simple 7 Blood Pressure” as a tool to learn what blood pressure is, why it is important to maintain a healthy blood pressure, what you can do to control blood pressure levels, and UNL’s resources to help

Control Cholesterol

Controlling cholesterol levels is important to reducing the risk of heart disease and strokes. Use “UNL Wellness Life’s Simple 7 Control Cholesterol” to learn about what cholesterol is, why it is important to control, what you can do to control cholesterol levels, and University's resources to help you along the way. 

Reduce Blood Sugar

It is important to monitor the sugar we intake on a daily basis to keep our hearts, kidneys, eyes, and nerves in good health. Use “UNL Wellness Life’s Simple 7 Reduce Blood Sugar” as a tool to learn what blood glucose is, why healthy levels of glucose are important, what you can do to control your sugar intake, and the University's resources to help you along the way. 

Get Active

Being active is not only mentally and physically rewarding, it can also dramatically better your overall health. Use “UNL Wellness Life’s Simple 7 Get Active” to learn what physical activity is, why it is important to be active, what you can do to get active, and the University's resources to help you along the way. 

Eat Better

Eating healthy can make you feel good, stay healthy, and ward off risk of cardiovascular disease. Use “UNL Wellness Life’s Simple 7 Eat Better” to learn about what it means to eat better, why it is important to have a healthy diet, what you can do to start incorporating healthier foods, and the University’s resources to help you along the way. 

Lose Weight

Getting rid of unneeded weight and fat not only help your heart, lungs, blood vessels, and bones work more efficiently, but also allow you to feel better. Use “UNL Wellness Life’s Simple 7 Lose Weight” to learn what weight is, why it is important to maintain a healthy weight, what you can do if you need to lose weight, and the University’s resources to help you along the way. 

Stop Smoking

By not smoking, you can dramatically reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and improve your overall health. Use “UNL Wellness Life’s Simple 7 Stop Smoking ” as a tool to learn what smoking is, why it’s important to not smoke, what you can do to quit smoking, and the University’s resources to help you along the way.
